Having one or two spiders in your home isn’t much of a problem. In fact, it can actually be beneficial to have some of them around. Spiders eat flies, mosquitoes, and other insects that can be serious pests in your home, which might be worth having a few webs in some out-of-the-way places. Most spiders are harmless to people, but they can still cause problems when they lay eggs, spin webs everywhere, and otherwise take over your home.
Dealing with a spider infestation isn’t that different from any other pest control situation. First, you have to recognize that you have a problem, and then you have to work toward a solution. With that being said, here is how you can deal with an abundance of spiders in your home.
Recognizing a Spider Infestation
As we said before, having one or two spiders in your home isn’t a problem, nor is it a sign that you have an infestation. Instead of freaking out at the sight of a single spider, look for signs such as webs that reappear in the same places no matter how many times you sweep them away, spiders that almost always appear in the darkest corners of your home, and egg sacs in corners and in webs.
Seeing egg sacs is almost always a sure sign that you have a spider infestation. Not only does it mean that spiders have made themselves at home in your house, but there will soon be many more of them crawling around once the eggs in the sacs hatch. Once you see egg sacs, it’s best to take action and contact an exterminator as soon as possible.
Dealing with a Spider Infestation
The best way to deal with a spider infestation is to prevent an infestation in the first place. This is sometimes easier said than done, especially in the fall when spiders start to move indoors, but it can be done.
First of all, try to keep your home clean. Regular vacuuming will remove any webs, egg sacs, and even the spiders themselves from your home. Keeping your home relatively free of trash will also keep flies and other pests that act as spider food sources out of your home. Without a regular food source in your home, the spiders will either leave or die out. This will also mean keeping your outdoor lights off whenever possible. These lights attract insects, which will in turn attract spiders. Finally, seal off any cracks and gaps in your home, as these are ideal entry points for spiders and other tiny pests.
If you see a spider in your home, you have a few options for getting rid of it. If you’re the type who doesn’t like to kill spiders, you can catch them alive fairly easily. Slowly slide a piece of paper up to the spider and get it to crawl onto it. Once the spider is safely on the paper, place a jar or a cup over it. You can then hold onto the paper and the jar and bring the spider outside.
Catching a spider alive with a piece of paper and a jar works well if you only see one spider, but it’s a futile gesture if you have several spiders in your home. Crushing spiders outright is obviously a good way to kill them, but that can get messy. Many spiders that get into your home are quite large, and crushing something roughly the size of a nickel or a quarter will leave an ugly stain. Instead, use a vacuum to suck them up. Not only does this get rid of the spiders, but it will also get rid of their webs and egg sacs. You can even remove large numbers of spiders and their webs this way.
When to Call the Exterminator
If you know where spiders are getting into your home and where they congregate, you can use a pesticide containing pyrethroid to kill them. This doesn’t always work though; the pesticide has to be placed in a way so that the spiders crawl through it. If the spiders don’t crawl through the pesticides, all you’ve done is spray a sticky substance on your floor in certain corners of your home.
